The Kentucky Game

North Carolina had their chances at Kentucky and did not finish the game. The 'Heels missed 9 straight field goals late in the second half and turnovers once again killed them. UNC had their best three-point shooting game of the season (11-18) and it was a great game. Its a shame that the 'Heels lost.

The Tarheels can take alot from this game. Freshman P.J. Hairston came up huge in this game hitting 3 out of 4 three-pointers. He showed he is not shy about putting up a big shot in a hostile environment. Reggie Bullock also hit a few big shots and I thought played some solid defense.

There were also some negatives to this game. I do not think that Tyler Zeller did a real good job of handling the double team as evidenced by his 4 turnovers. Dexter Strickland couldn't seem to hang onto the ball. The 'Heels also had a bad shooting game as well as being outrebounded for the 4th time in 8 games.

Tarheel Football Versus Duke

The Tarheels beat Duke today 37-21 to finish 7-5 on the season in what was probably Everett Withers last regular season game as UNC's coach. It was too much Bryn Renner, Dwight Jones, and Gio Bernard for Duke.

The game wasn't as close as the final score as the 'Heels pretty much dominated the game from the start. Duke only had one sustained drive the entire game with the other two scores coming on long touchdowns. The 'Heels were methodical on offense with a combination of Renners passing, Bernard's running, and Dwight Jones receiving. The 'Heels were opportunistic on defense causing four turnovers and they were led by Zach Brown's 10 tackles and Quinton Coples 2 sacks.

There was a little bit of gamesmanship at the end of the game which I was glad to see. Duke called an unnecessary timeout with 1:22 to go in the game so on the first play after the timeout, backup QB Braden Hanson completed a 47 yard bomb to TE Eric Ebron. It was a beautiful pass by Hanson and he has a big league arm.

There were only two bowl games that the 'Heels seemed to be headed for and that was the Independence Bowl and the Military Bowl but I am sure at this point, UNC will take whatever is offered to them.

Versus South Carolina

The UNC Tarheels ran their record to 5-0 with a victory over the University of South Carolina Gamecocks last night, 87-62. The Tarheels seem to still be feeling their way around and all of their games thus far have the appearance of glorified practices. Harrison Barnes led the way with 21 points, P.J. Hairston had a career high 19 points on the strength of 5-8 shooting on three-pointers, and John Henson had 18. Kendall Marshall had 14 assists and only one turnover to go along with 6 steals.

Roy Williams seems to have settled on an eight man rotation with Reggie Bullock, James Michael McAdoo and P.J. Hairston being the major contributors coming off the bench. Reggie Bullock finally found his outside shot against Tennessee State earlier in the week scoring a career high 23 points on 6-7 three-point shooting and that was one thing the 'Heels needed to work on with the games getting a little bit tougher.

One area that is still a concern is the rebounding. South Carolina outrebounded them last night 43-35 and they are giving up way too many offensive rebounds and second chance points. UNLV will not be a pushover and a solid Wisconsin team is coming up next week.

Versus UNC-Asheville

The UNC Tarheels helped UNC-A open up their new arena, Kimmel Arena, last night and it was an electric small college atmosphere. An announced sellout of 3200 people and they were rockin' the place.

The 'Heels had too much size for UNC-A and they just kept pounding it on the inside. Tyler Zeller had a game high 27 points, John Henson had 20 points and 12 rebounds, and Harrison Barnes had 17 points in the 91-75 win. Point Guard Kendall Marshall only had 6 points but 15 assists and only one turnover.

After the first two games, the Tarheels most glaring weaknesses are turnovers and outside shooting. 31 turnovers in the first two games is alot but with the Tarheels fast break offense, you have to expect a little higher than average turnover count. The problem in the first two games is that they have really not had the opportunity to run their break.

In the first couple of games, they really haven't needed points from the outside but it would be nice if they could develop someone to come in and fill it up from the outside. Freshman P.J. Hairston looks like he has a nice outside stroke and Reggie Bullock has the potential to be our "Microwave" coming off the bench. Harrison Barnes is the only starter that can hit threes.

Versus North Carolina State

It took me the entire bye week to be able to blog about the NC State game. The Tarheels were unmotivated, lacked any kind of focus, and the offensive gameplan put together by Offensive Coordinator John Shoop was the worst of the year and he has had some real lemons.

The numbers don't lie. 165 yards of total offense and that includes a whopping 3 yards rushing. QB Bryn Renner had -47 himself based on 4 Wolfpack sacks including a whirling dervish of a pass attempt/fumble that lost about 30 yards. That had to make ESPN's Not Top Ten. The only good thing that came out of this game was the fact that RB Gio Bernard went over 1000 yards on the season. Career backup Braden Hanson got his first significant playing time of his career and actually didn't look bad.

I had a diehard Wolfpack fan tell me that he didn't think State's defense played that great, it was just that North Carolina's offense was that bad.

With all of the talking that Everett Withers did in the week leading up to the game, the team should have been fired up and ready to play. They were not in any way, shape, or form and I believe that cost Coach Withers a chance to remove the "Interim" from his job title. I was really pulling for him as a fellow Appalachian State graduate to get the job but I believe that the NC State game took him out of the running.

My Favorite Time Of Year

My favorite time of the year as far as Tarheel sports are concerned has to be the first game of the college basketball season. They are almost always going be in contention for the national title, they run a clean program, and college basketball is king in North Carolina.

Last nights game against Michigan State was exceptional in all of the ways already mentioned by most media outlets in the world- the USS Vinson, the troops, President Obama in attendance, and other basketball stars and celebrity types. The game itself was almost anti-climactic.

The North Carolina Tarheels beat the Michigan State Spartans 67-55 after a sluggish middle of the first half that saw them go down by 7 points. You could definitely tell it was the first game. Harrison Barnes led the way with 17 points, John Henson had 12 points and an impressive 9 blocked shots, and Dexter Strickland chipped in with 10 points. Freshmen P.J. Hairston and James Michael McAdoo got in some positive minutes off the bench and Freshman Point Guard Stillman White got in at the end of the game and hit 3 out of 4 free throws. His development as a backup Point Guard to Kendall Marshall will be a key as the season goes on.

Michigan State did expose some weaknesses in the 'Heels overall game. The most glaring of those weaknesses is rebounding. John Henson is probably the best shot blocker in college basketball but strength has always been an issue for him. I thought he and Tyler Zeller both got pushed around under the basket. Michigan State had 24 offensive rebounds and outrebounded the Tarheels 49-34 overall. This is an issue that has to be corrected.

Overall, the 'Heels played a good game. Defensively they were solid and held the Spartans to 30% shooting for the game and 2 for 20 from the three point line. They did a great job of identifying the shooters and getting in their face. Offensively, the 'Heels did not run as much as they would like to but were still efficient in their half court sets. John Henson showed a nice mid-range jumper that he has been working on all summer and his length gives him the ability to get to the basket in a hurry.

Michigan State is not ranked in the top 25 and have alot of young players but did have some good athletes and it was a good opening game for the 'Heels. Its good to be 1-0.

Wake Forest- First Impressions

What can you say about a 49-24 victory? The offense had over 560 yards, the defense got five turnovers (4 Int's and a fumble) which the offense converted into 28 points. That was probably the most complete game that the Tarheels have played all season long.

The only negatives I can see in this game is the one turnover on a botched center exchange with QB Bryn Renner and the blocked punt. I could tell when the 'Heels punted for the first time and Wake Forest almost blocked it that they were going to block one sometime during the game.

I do like the way that the 'Heels put their foot on the gas when Wake Forest pulled to within 21-17 and scored 28 straight points. They needed to finish that game strong.

I am kind of disappointed in the defensive line play of the 'Heels when it comes to putting pressure on the QB. It seems like the only time they could put pressure on the Wake Forest QB was when they blitzed. They only got one sack then.

It's Nice To Be On The Receiving End

The UNC Tarheel football team found out in todays 49-24 win over Wake Forest, it is nice to be on the receiving end of the turnover gift festival for a change. Five Wake Forest turnovers versus one for the Tarheels. The 'Heels took full advantage of those five turnovers by converting them into 28 points.

I have always said the Wake Forest Head Coach Jim Grobe does more with less talent than any coach in the ACC. This year is proof of that and this was not a performace that is indicative of a Grobe coached team. UNC will gladly take the win because it was badly needed. Their 6-3 record makes them bowl eligible. I don't believe any NCAA ruling will affect a potential bowl appearance this season.

First Impressions- Louisville

This game may have redefined "winning ugly". 17 total plays in the first half for a net total of 62 yards. The 'Heels only crossed the 50-yard line one time and on that play Gio Bernard fumbled the ball trying to fight for extra yardage. The defense utilized their "bend but don't break" philosophy to the fullest as Louisville missed two medium range but very makeable field goals and Zach Brown intercepted a pass inside the 20 yard line. The crowd was flat and had no energy and so were the Tarheels.

The second half was a little bit better as Gio Bernard opened the scoring with a 3 yard run and Dwight Jones followed that a little bit later with a 43 yard TD catch that was pretty much all Dwight Jones. The defense broke on Louisville's final series and allowed a TD pass thanks to a three man pass rush and everyone playing in a prevent-type deep zone. The 'Heels defense made that TD drive easier than a drive on NCAA Football 12.

This was one of those games that the 'Heels won but probably shouldn't have. They improve to 5-1 and don't get me wrong, I'll take it. At some point and time, I believe they are going to have to turn Bryn Renner loose and see what he can do thru the air. This may be the best running game they have had in years as Gio Bernard is a real talent but the 'Heels also have a couple of studs on the offensive line in Jonathan Cooper and James Hurst.

First Impressions- East Carolina

Games like this always make me nervous. Its a game North Carolina should win, but against a motivated, fired up team on the road, alot of bad things can happen. The Tarheels went from an opponent in Georgia Tech that featured the triple option and rushed for over 300 yards to going against pass happy East Carolina that threw the ball 58 times and had over 400 yards passing.

On offense, the Tarheels achieved an almost Monk-like balance with 230 yards passing and 226 yards rushing with four of their five touchdowns coming thru the air. The Tarheels did not turn the ball over while forcing 4 East Carolina turnovers, all of those coming in the first half.

Several plays stood out. Dwight Jones two acrobatic touchdown catches, the athleticism that Defensive Tackle Sylvester Williams displayed on his interception at the end of the first half, and the pinpoint accuracy of Bryn Renner on his long TD pass to Eric Highsmith as well as the fourth down completion to Tight End Nelson Hurst that helped put the game away.

The gameplan that the Tarheels put together was a bit conservative but they utilized their strength and that was their massive offensive line. They outweighed East Carolina's defensive line by an average of almost 50 pounds a man and they continually blasted holes open for Gio Bernard, especially in the first half. They also did not allow Bryn Renner to be sacked. Offensive lineman Travis Bond also had his first career reception on a batted pass. He lost 7 yards on the play but at least he had the athletic ability to catch the ball.

The 'Heels improve to 4-1 on the season and only need two more wins to become bowl eligible in Interim Head Coach Everett Withers first season as coach. That is, if the NCAA allows them to go to a bowl game.

Versus Georgia Tech- The Defense

There is not alot to say about the Tarheels defensive effort against Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets high powered triple option offense rolled up 312 yards rushing and had several long sustained drives that was the ultimate backbreaker for the 'Heels. They also had about 200 yards passing. I think the effort was there but the Yellow Jackets execution trumped that effort.

Tre Boston is turning into a playmaker for the North Carolina Tarheels defense. He recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass in this game and the 'Heels need to be able to turn defense into offense to be a contender this year.

Versus Georgia Tech- The Offense

The offense came alive in the second half after a forgettable first half against Georgia Tech. It seemed that Offensive Coordinator John Shoop was more concerned about holding the ball and playing keep away from Georgia Tech in the first half than he was running his offense. He did not put QB Bryn Renner in a position to be successful. Third-and-Long is a difficult position to put any QB in on just about every series.

So far this season North Carolina seems to perform at a higher level when they are using the pass to set up the run. After the first game, the teams they have played seemed determined to make Bryn Renner beat them. As was the case against Georgia Tech, interceptions have been his problem this season.

Gio Bernard seems to get better and better with every game and his play has relegated Senior Ryan Houston into being a non-factor. Gio had a scintillating 55-yard run for a TD against Georgia Tech and is well on his way to being a 1,000 yard rusher, averaging over 100 yards a game now.

The Tarheel receiving corps has been almost all Dwight Jones with a little bit of Erik Highsmith thrown in. The rest of the receivers have been non-existent. Jones had 8 more catches against Georgia Tech, Freshman Sean Tapley got his first career start and had one catch for 18 yards, and Jheranie Boyd had one catch for 4 yards. The Tight Ends had more drops than they had catches although Nelson Hurst did have his first career TD reception.

First Impressions- Georgia Tech

It was a tale of two halves today for the North Carolina Tarheels versus the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Offensively in the first half, the North Carolina Tarheels Offensive Game Plan lacked imagination and was very predictable. The 'Heels only passed on obvious passing downs and Bryn Renner was only 4 for 9 for 36 yards and they only had 93 yards of total offense at halftime and Gio Bernard had 68 of those on the ground and 18 on receptions.

The Tarheels had to play catch up the entire second half and finally pulled even at 28-28 but the defense could not stop the Georgia Tech ground game. They still had a chance to win the game in the fourth quarter and you can't ask for much more than that.

Versus Virginia- The Defense

I thought North Carolina's defense got ran over a little bit against Virginia. They gave up over 450 yards of offense and Virginia averaged over 5 yards per rushing attempt. They were not able to mount much of a pass rush and it showed in those statistics as well.

The Tarheels were able to force their first three turnovers of the year, a fumble recovery by DT Sylvester Williams on a botched snap (that stopped a Virginia drive) and two Matt Merletti interceptions late in the game.

Versus Virginia- The Offense

The offense was much more balanced against Virginia and it looks like a third running back is emerging in the Tarheels backfield rotation. Gio Bernard led the way with 102 yards on 12 carries and got some nice gains early in the third quarter, Ryan Houston only had 17 yards on 9 attempts but scored 2 touchdowns, and A.J. Blue logged some meaningful attempts in the second half, gaining 40 yards on 9 attempts.

I was glad to see Jheranie Boyd finally get some passes thrown his way as he caught his first TD reception of the season and also got a touch on an end around. I wouldn't let speed like that go to waste. Gio Bernard has also shown his value catching the ball out of the backfield but I do believe the 'Heels ran the screen pass one time to many.

I really liked John Shoop's offensive game plan. There were several end arounds that helped keep the defense honest, a halfback pass, and a wide receiver pass that was completed for 36 yards from Reggie Wilkins to Dwight Jones.

Bryn Renner played a solid game but this was more of a case of game management than it was putting up big numbers although he still threw for 2 TD's. He completed over 70 % of his passes and his completion percentage still went down on the season.

First Impressions- Virginia

As a diehard Tarheel fan, I should be ecstatic to be 3-0. I should be thrilled beyond belief that we won our ACC opener against Virginia, a traditional thorn in the Tarheel foot. It was also the first ACC opener they had won in 11 seasons. The thing that bothers me the most is that they should have put Rutgers and Virginia away early in the second half but didn't.

They showed vast improvement over the Rutgers game in three areas. They didn't commit any bad penalties, they forced a few turnovers, and they only put the ball on the ground once. The fumble came at a crucial time as they could have gone up at a minimum 31-10. Instead they let Virginia hang around.

Offensive Coordinator John Shoop's playcalling really stood out in this game. He opened up the playbook like he never has before. Eight different players had rushing attempts in the game. The 'Heels had a halfback option (I don't care what anyone says, A.J. Blue has the strongest arm on the team) and Freshman Wide Receiver Reggie Wilkins completed a pass to Dwight Jones. Jones made a one handed catch while being mauled on the other end of that pass.

Versus Rutgers- The Defense

The Tarheels run stuffers played a great game. The Rutgers offense totaled only one rushing yard but their pass defense is another story. The 'Heels are young and inexperienced in the defensive backfield and it really shows at times. The 'Heels defense also took some stupid penalties and prolonged some Rutgers posessions. It is definitely a work in progress.

The Tarheels have some serious speed at Linebacker. They remind me of the Florida State teams from 10-15 years ago. Zach Brown and Kevin Reddick were really flying around and even Ebele Okakpu went sprinting into the backfield to bring down a running back for a loss. Darius Lipford is another one with speed that came on a blitz and batted a pass down. They all got in on the act.

There were a couple of occasions in this game where the Tarheels had a chance at interceptions but flat out did not catch the ball. Matt Merletti and MLB Tommy Heffernan come to mind. They need to start creating turnovers.

Versus Rutgers- The Offense

The offense struggled a little bit against Rutgers. The offensive line really didn't create many holes for the Tarheel running backs. They only had two long runs, one each by Gio Bernard and Ryan Houston. Out of leading rusher Gio Bernard's 81 yards, 66 of those came on two runs. 33 yards out of Ryan Houston's came on one run.

Completion wise, QB Bryn Renner had another good game but he threw three picks, he threw two up for grabs and he tried strong-arming one into Erik Highsmith where it was defleccted and intercepted. He seems to be having a hard time finding the safety playing centerfield. He has thrown picks to the centerfielder in each game this season.

The wide receivers played solid games with the exception of the fact they put two balls on the ground. Dwight Jones, barring injury, may be the best wide receiver in the ACC. He posted another 100 + yard game and scored another TD. He is setting himself up to be a high draft pick in next years NFL draft. Freshman Tight End Eric Ebron had a nice 27 yard reception and Tight End Nelson Hurst also had his first reception on the season.

The positives that came out of this game are that the running game has a sense of excitement about it with Gio Bernard back there. His 60 yard TD run was a thing of beauty. Ryan Houston also had a nice 33 yard run that sealed the deal for the Tarheels towards the end of the game. He was also very alert in recovering the fumbled snap by Bryn Renner and may have saved the game in doing so.

Growing Pains

Todays 24-22 win over Rutgers was about as ugly a win as you can possibly get. 5 Tarheel turnovers, 3 interceptions thrown by Bryn Renner and 2 fumbles by wide receivers after the catch. the 'Heels put at least 4 other balls on the ground, the last one of those occurred when they were just trying to kneel on the ball. Yes they still have alot of work to do.

The first series of the game the Tarheels looked like an offensive juggernaut when Renner hit Dwight Jones with a 66 yard TD pass. With the exception of three or four runs, their run game was anemic. They only had a single yard rushing after the First Quarter. However, every time Giovani Bernard touches the ball, you can't help but feel something exciting is going to happen. He got the start today over Ryan Houston. The 60 yard TD run of his was a thing of beauty.

The defense has helped sustain drives by their opponents in the first two games by taking bad penalties on a couple of third and longs. Granted Rutgers had a short field to work on several of their offensive series but the 'Heel defense helped them out on several occasions. They allowed Rutgers to convert several third-and-longs. They also should have had two interceptions, one by Matt Merletti and the other by Freshman MLB Tommy Heffernan, but the balls were dropped.

The Tarheels improved to 2-0 but the offense left alot of points out on the field and I guess you could say that the defense did too. Everette Withers, in the post game interview I saw, realizes that he was lucky to get out of there with a win and that the coaching staff has alot of correctable material to work with.

James Madison- Part III- The Freshmen

I was surprised to see that 10 true Freshmen got to play in the game against James Madison. That was one of the top numbers in the country. That can be a good and a bad thing. Playing the Freshmen gives them game experience but I wouldn't want to burn a potential Red-Shirt year in a blowout win and that be the only game they play all year.

Three of the Freshmen Tight Ends got to play-Eric Ebron, Sean Fitzpatrick, and Jack Tabb- and Eric Ebron really flipped the James Madison player on the interception return.

The most surprising Freshman that got to play (and the start) was walk-on Punter Thomas Hibbard. He beat out incumbent C.J. Feagles for the job although I am sure it is probably a week-to-week or maybe even a punt-to-punt competition. His first punt was downed at the 1- yard line by Special Teams stalwart Matt Merletti. Although Hibbard later botched a snap and had his punt blocked, he had a pretty good showing.

Freshmen Wide Receivers Reggie Wilkins, Sean Tapley, and T.J. Thorpe mostly got to play on Special Teams although Wilkins had one carry for nine yards.

James Madison Part II

For the first time in quite a while the excitement seems to be back in Chapel Hill. Don't get me wrong, it was there last year as well but due to the NCAA investigation just days before the season started, the wind got taken out of those sails pretty quickly.

I credit alot of that excitement to the "X Factor". The X Factor was the unknown that was Tar Heel football before the kickoff against James Madison. Nobody knew exactly how the Tar Heels would perform. You had a Red-Shirt Sophomore QB with all of two passes under his collegiate belt. The running backs were largely a question mark coming in with Ryan Houston being the only one with any real game experience and he had not had any contact in about a year, Giovanni Bernard was a Red-Shirt Freshman in his first game back from ACL surgery, and A.J. Blue had changed positions due to the transfer of Hunter Furr. The defensive backfield also did not have alot of experience in what was perceived to be one of the 'Heels weakest areas.

Some excitement should also be credited to Giovanni Bernard. I don't think the 'Heels have had a running back with that kind of shiftiness since Kelvin Bryant or Amos Lawrence if you want to go that far back. As soon as I saw his first carry, I'm thinking "The 'Heels may have something here...". His second TD run was a thing of beauty. He is also the perfect compliment to power back Ryan Houston.

James Madison Part I

I am excited about the potential of the 2011 North Carolina Tarheels football team. The biggest question for me heading into the opening game against James Madison was starting QB Bryn Renner. He only attempted two passes last year and a player can be an All-American in practice but not perform well in games. Bryn Renner answered my question with an exclamation point. His stat line read 22-23 for 277 yards, 2 TDs, 1 Int (so technically none of his passes hit the ground), and 1 rushing TD.

I thought Offensive Coordinator John Shoop called an excellent game. He called a balanced game, set Renner up with several easy throws at the beginning of the game to help get him into the flow, and helped build his confidence. I believe you have to set your players up to be successful and Shoop did a good job of that.

The offensive line was one of the Tarheels strengths heading into this season and they went out and showed that it was not just hype against James Madison. Bryn Renner wasn't hardly touched the entire game and had time to make his throws. Tackle James Hurst led the way on many of the sweeps and outside runs and it is hard to believe that he is only a sophomore.

Dwight Jones also had a great game. 9 receptions, 116 yards, and 2 TDs is setting setting the table for a record-breaking senior season. I don't think he will make anyone forget Hakeem Nicks but he is carving is own niche.

The NCAA Tournament

The Diamond 'Heels earned the #3 National seed in the NCAA Baseball tournament and have steamrolled their first two opponents, Maine by the score of 4-0, and James Madison, 14-0.

Senior Right-hander Patrick Johnson pitched 8 shutout innings against James Madison extending his personal scoreless streak to 23 innings. The great thing about shutting out James Madison is the fact that they led the nation in runs scored this year. The 'Heels play the winner of the Maine-James Madison game tonight at 6.

Tarheels in the NFL Draft

Nine North Carolina Tarheels were drafted in the 2011 NFL Draft over the course of the past three days. That was the highest total for any college. The draft didn't come without its share of surprises.

The Tarheels marquis players all went in the first two rounds. Robert Quinn, Bruce Carter, Marvin Austin, and Greg Little were all drafted by late in the second round. It would have been interesting to see where they all (with the exception of Bruce Carter) would have been drafted if they had been on the field last year.

There were a few players that I was kind of surprised that were drafted. Johnny White in the 5th round to the Buffalo Bills was a little bit of a surprise but his versatility in returning kicks and playing Special Teams worked in his favor. Ryan Taylor going in the 7th round to the Green Bay Packers also was a surprise to me but his versatility on Special Teams and the fact that he had played Linebacker earlier in his career helped him as well. I had read before the draft that his stock was rising and he had interviews with several teams. T.J. Yates went in the 5th round to the Houston Texans, going ahead of big name Quarterbacks Greg McElroy of Alabama and Tyrod Taylor of Virginia Tech.

Quan Sturdivant did not go until the 6th round to the Arizona Cardinals and I believed he would go in the first couple of rounds, the 3rd round at the latest. Almost all of the draft publications that I viewed had him rated as the #1 or #2 Inside Linebacker prospect.

The three players that did not get drafted also kind of surprised me. Deunta Williams, Kendric Burney, and Zach Pianalto are all going to have to go the free agent route if they want to make it into the NFL.

Williams broke a bone in his leg in the Motor City Bowl at the end of last season may have had something to do with his not being drafted. USA Today NFL Draft 2011 had him listed as the #3 Safety coming into the draft. Pianalto also had injury problems throughout his career at North Carolina. He played about half a season every year and then he was done due to some freak injury.

I can't wait to see all of them wearing pro jerseys on Sundays and I hope those that weren't drafted get at least a look as free agents. With the current labor situation in the NFL right now, all of the players, drafted and free agent alike, will have a tougher time of it this season.

The Voice of the Tarheels

It was with great surprise that I read of the retirement yesterday of the voice of the Tarheels, Woody Durham. I treated him about like I did Dean Smith. I figured he would last forever and never imagined the day when he would retire.

Woody Durham got me through most every Carolina football and basketball game in the mid-1970's before the days of ESPN and all of the other sports channels that televise every game. Even recently, I would turn down the volume of Dan Bonner and his anti-Carolina bias, Dick Vitale and his pro-Duke rantings even when Carolina wasn't playing Duke, and Billy Packer and his idiocy and turn up Woody Durham. My wife would always tell me that it was harder for her to follow the action in the game that way because radio and TV are broadcast differently. My reply was I would rather the game be harder to follow and listen to someone that knew what they were talking about than listen to those clowns. He was always worth listening to.

I always used to make sure that I caught the Dean Smith show with Woody Durham as the host every Sunday morning. WLOS-TV out of Asheville carried if for years. They always showed the highlights of the past weeks Tarheel games (with the radio call by Woody Durham) and it was the best thirty minutes on TV.

I had the privilege of meeting Woody Durham after he broadcast his 1,000th game for the Tarheels. It was a basketball game against Clemson in Chapel Hill (we all know how that turned out) and it was the first basketball game I had ever been to in the Dean Dome (or anywhere else for that matter) and Mr. Durham was walking through the stands after the game. I offered my congratulations on this milestone, he shook my hand, and he was very gracious even though I am sure he had other places he needed to be. He was not only the voice of the Tarheels, he was a class act as well.

The Triumvirate Is Complete

The press release that everyone has been waiting for came out of Chapel Hill this morning saying that Harrison Barnes was coming back for one more year of college basketball. Combined with the return of Tyler Zeller and John Henson and the coming of James McAdoo and P.J. Hairston, the 'Heels should be primed for a run at the national title in 2012.

I think Harrison Barnes made a wise decision. I think there are several facets of his game he needs to work on and I truly believe that he wants to win a national championship with the University of North Carolina.

I am sure there are other factors involved such as the potential for an NBA work stoppage, several other players have declared their intention to turn pro this year that increases the competition, and he realizes North Carolina is going to be loaded next year.

The Spring Football Game-Defense

I would love to see the Tarheels defense go back to the ballhawking days of Dre Bly and using the defense to generate some offense. That should have been the case last year but we all know what happened there. The best thing that came out of the mess last year was that it gave several of the Freshmen that probably would have red-shirted alot of game experience.

The defensive line is going to be the strength of this defense. Quinton Coples, Tydreke Powell, and Donte-Paige Moss are all probably going to make some preseason all-star lists and are all poised for breakout years. Coples and Moss both had solid years last year and Moss may finally be living up to the hype he had when he came in as a Freshman. Tim Jackson and Kareem Martin are capable backups that got valuable experience last year and Juco transfer Defensive Tackle Sylvester Williams received alot of spring hype from coaches and players alike.

The linebacking core of Zach Brown, Kevin Reddick, and Herman Davidson are all solid and posess good speed. They are backed up by P.J. Clyburn, Dion Guy, and Darius Lipford. I would love to see the linebackers blitz more and create alot of pressure on the opposing teams quarterback but these linebackers can also run sideline to sideline.

The defensive backfield returns Charles Brown and Jonathan Smith from a year off and they are joined by Tre Boston and Jabari Price as the starters on the spring depth chart. Sophomore Josh Hunter has undergone another position change to Free Safety and made some noise in the spring game with an interception and a pass break up. Mywan Jackson, Matt Merletti, Brian Gupton, and Gene Robinson round out the group. Jackson had a great spring game last year but disappeared once the season began. I believe he suffered a couple of injuries that hurt his playing time.

The Tarheel defense lost alot of talent to the NFL this year for one reason or another but I believe the group they have this year has alot of potential. I believe that it will be alot of "ground and pound" on offense and don't give up the big play on defense and this is a good recipe for a top 20 team and a contender to be in the ACC title game in December.

The Spring Football Game-Offense

A new Quarterback is set to take the reigns for the Tarheels for the first time in 4 years with the graduation of T.J. Yates and it looks to be red-shirt Sophomore Bryn Renner's job to lose. He looked great in last years spring game and I thought he outplayed T.J. Yates. He had another solid spring game this year. Spring games really aren't worth much as far as evaluating talent goes or a good predictor of regular season success.

All of the QB's on the roster are untested with like a total of 6 or 7 career passes attempted so finding a backup is going to be just as important. Braden Hanson, A.J. Blue, and all-everything Freshman Marquise Williams are the candidates and my guess is they will red-shirt Williams. Williams did have a nice 43 yard run on a scramble in the spring game. Blue has the versatility to play running back and operated out of the wildcat formation in his brief playing experience a couple of years ago.

The running game is going to need some of the young players to step up, especially in light of the fact that incumbent starter Ryan Houston broke his clavicle during the game. He had surgery on it today. Red-shirt Freshman Giovanni Bernard was held out of the game for precautionary reasons. The others listed on the depth chart are rarely used Junior Hunter Furr (although he did have some important carries in the Florida State victory last year) and true Freshman Travis Riley who enrolled in January. Fullback is being held down by returning Senior Devon Ramsay.

The offensive line is supposed to be one of the strengths of the team. They average over 300 pounds across the front with quite a bit of experience returning. Several red-shirt Freshmen and walk-ons are listed on the depth chart but some impressive recruits such as Kiaro Holts are coming in to back them up in the fall.

One of the other other positions that brings alot of experience is Wide Receiver. Dwight Jones, Erik Highsmith, and Jheranie Boyd are poised to have solid years. Jhay Boyd is the "X Factor" here. He virtually disappeared after the LSU game last year and the emergence of Dwight Jones. Red-Shirt Freshmen Reggie Wilkins and Sean Tapley have a chance to step up.

Junior transfer Nelson Hurst is the only returning Tight End with a minimal amount of playing time until the Freshmen Eric Ebron and Jack Tabb arrive on the scene. Hurst is backed up by red-shirt Freshman Sean Fitzpatrick. The H-Back position is being manned by Senior Christian Wilson.

I believe the 'Heels will be more of a running team this upcoming season and rely less on the passing game because the offensive line is built to run block. That is where the horses are and Ryan Houston is a big, strong back and if the surgery is successful, he is geared to be the 'Heels first thousand yard rusher since Jonathan Linton in 1997.

Henson, Zeller, and Barnes

It was with great pleasure that I read last week that John Henson and Tyler Zeller announced they were returning to the University of North Carolina to continue their college basketball careers. It really surprised me that they even considered turning pro. I honestly didn't see either one being high draft picks if they even went in the first round.

John Henson needs to get bigger and stronger. He is a great defensive presence but he will get pushed around in the NBA especially on the inside where they don't call fouls. He also needs to work on his offensive game especially with his back to the basket. He is prone to the double team and turns the ball over way too much.

Tyler Zeller is a small forward trapped in a centers body. He has a good inside game but is also prone to the double team. He is not the defensive presence that Henson is and can be pushed around under the basket by bigger centers. Zellers strength is in running the court. He may be the best I have ever seen on the leak out on the fastbreak. I don't think he will get too many of those opportunities in the NBA.

Harrison Barnes is the "X" factor in this group. Most people believe he will be a top five pick in the draft but I don't think he is ready to go pro. His game has alot of holes from his jump shot to his unwillingness to drive to the basket. He used the drive more as soon as the season progressed but he still settled for the jump shot too often. The money, if that is all it is about, will be there if he wants it but it will also be there the year after. I think one factor he needs to consider is the possibility of an NBA lockout.

If Harrison Barnes joins the other two in coming back for one more season, and add the two McDonald's All-Americans coming in, alot of experts are already predicting that UNC would be the preseason #1. Those are lofty expectations and things would finally be back to normal in Chapel Hill.

National Player of the Week

UNC Freshman Third Baseman Colin Moran was named National Player of the Week by the NCBWA last week for his 4 Homerun, 13 RBI performance in Carolina's 5-0 week. Included in those five wins was a weekend sweep of Duke. I love the sound of that- a weekend sweep of Duke. I was surprised to learn that this was the 'Heels first series win over Duke since 2008.

Moran leads the 23-4 and #6 ranked 'Heels with a .362 average and 5 homeruns and 35 RBI's. He has also had a recent power surge with 4 homeruns in the past 6 games.

The Tarheels are not going to beat anybody with the longball this year. I believed at the beginning of the year that the 'Heels were going to have to play more station-to-station baseball. They only have 21 Homeruns in 27 games but a team Batting Average of .308 and 39 stolen bases in 49 attempts is enough to average almost 8 1/2 runs per game. Combine that with a team ERA of 3.17 and that equals a 23-4 record and a #6 national ranking.

The Tragic End To The Season

The Kentucky game was a tough matchup for the 'Heels. John Calipari went small against Carolina and it worked. They couldn't guard the perimeter on defense (Kentucky was 12 of 22 from the three-point line), and they couldn't hit from the perimeter on offense (3 of 17).

John Henson may have had his worst game of the season (4 points, 9 rebounds, 0 blocked shots, and 5 fouls) before fouling out and Tyler Zeller led the way again (21 points and 9 rebounds). Harrison Barnes (18 points but a horrible shooting night) reaffirmed my belief that he needs to come back to school for at least one more season. As a team, the 'Heels just did not play a solid game.

I do not like losing to John Calipari. There is no doubt that he is a good coach and an excellent recruiter but I believe that he has ran a "dirty" program wherever he has been. He always gets out right before the school gets caught. I think the sanctions should follow him where ever he goes.

On To the Elite Eight

The game against Marquette last night really surprised me. I thought Marquette would come out ready to play. From the opening tap, Marquette looked out of sync, they had a hard time getting into their offense, and defensively they were not as active or play with as much intensity they had in their first two games. North Carolina took advantage of their size inside on offense and got into the passing lanes on defense and combined with Marquette's poor shooting, led to many easy baskets and a 40-15 halftime lead. It was pretty much over at that point.

Marquette cut it as close as 14 points with about 4 minutes to go in the second half but the game was never in doubt. The 'Heels had a little bit of a letdown in the second half with their defensive intensity and offensive execution but I believe they just wanted the game to be over.

Tyler Zeller has had a monster tournament. He had 27 points and 15 rebounds against Marquette and is playing the best basketball of his career by a long shot. UNC's "big three" of Zeller, Harrison Barnes, and John Henson combined for 61 of the 81 points and 36 rebounds. Henson has come alive in the tournament as well but I do not know why he thinks he needs to be shooting from the perimeter.

The 'Heels still cannot hit from the perimeter on a consistent basis and Barnes and Leslie McDonald are their only legitimate outside threats but McDonald has been in a shooting slump that has lasted for about 15 games. Dexter Strickland will never be a scoring threat from the outside but he is much better in a transition game and he even nailed a 15 foot jump shot in transition last night.

John Henson has turned into a multi-faceted defensive presence that has caused problems for every team they have played in the tournament. He might be the best shot blocker in the history of the North Carolina Tarheels but to watch him guard the inbounds pass is a thing of beauty. He defelected another one last night in which the 'Heels gained posession.

Charles Barkley described the Tarheel big men as "soft" last night in the pregame segment of the CBS telecast and I would have to disagree with that. It is no secret that they are not physical but Zeller and Henson are extremely effective in the college game. The officials chose to "let them play" last night and in almost any situation like that the 'Heels are not going to be as effective.

When I refer to let them play, the officials chose to let the big men on the inside beat and bang and that definitely gave Marquette an advantage that they probably didn't take enough advantage of in the first half. Zeller did do a good job of denying the entry pass in the middle, picking off several and deflecting several more.

When the officials do choose to let them play, the play is much more physical, and the play always seems to be on the verge of out of control. It came very close last night. The foul committed on John Henson right before the end of the first half when he had a breakaway and the Marquette player wrapped his arms around Henson and spun him around before he made an attempt on the ball was when the officials started to lose a little bit of control of the game. Even announcer Clark Kellogg said it should have been called an intentional foul.

The physical play only escalated in the second half and I believe the only reason that Jae Crowder of Marquette had a technical foul called on him was because he called Henson a "mother------" and it was plainly audible on the broadcast. I took great satisfaction when Henson later blocked one of his shots into the third row (although Crowder later hit a three-pointer with Henson guarding him) and Henson and Crowder were woofing at each other then. I noticed from that point on, anytime Marquette's players had the opportunity to get in an extra shove or an elbow, they took full advantage of it because the officials were not going to call any of it. I chalk it up to the big lead and the composure of North Carolina's players that it didn't get out of control then. The officials weren't about to make a stand.

North Carolina vs. Marquette

On paper #2 seed North Carolina should not have a problem with #11 seed Marquette. They are really not that impressive nor did they have a particularly good season. Their record is only 22-14 (just 9-9 in the Big East Conference), they were in the lower end of their conference in almost every offensive and defensive statistical category, and they probably shouldn't have even made the tournament.

As I have heard so many times, they do not play the game on paper, it is played on the court. Marquette is a dangerous team for North Carolina. They are on a roll having taken out two higher seeds already, including #3 seed Syracuse. They are playing well defensively and with intensity, they are hitting the big shots when they need them, and they are playing with a chip on their shoulder.

Marquette probably has a slight quickness advantage over North Carolina but will it be enough to combat the 'Heels size advantage and strength in the middle. Marquette's leading scorer, Darius Johnson-Odom, is a Raleigh, NC native and they usually try to play their best against a Tobacco Road team because they did not get recruited by them.

North Carolina had better take care of the basketball tonight and take advantage of their size in the middle if they want to win this game. It would be kind of nice to build an early lead because the longer Marquette stays in the game, the more dangerous they become.

The Bullpen

The Diamond 'Heels are rolling again thanks to six straight wins, including a sweep of Virginia Tech on the road, two of those being one run victories. They had victories over UNC-Wilmington and High Point in the past couple of days. That puts them at 20-3 on the season and 4-2 in ACC play. They also have risen to #12 in the latest rankings.

Alot of that has to do with the work of the bullpen. Senior Right-hander Greg Holt anchors the bullpen leading the team with 12 appearances, 17 2/3
innings pitched, and has a 4-0 record and a 2.04 ERA. Sophomore right-hander Cody Penny has earned the closer's role, tied for third on the team with 10 appearances and leads the team with 4 saves.

Several Freshmen have taken on key roles out of the bullpen. Left-hander Tate Parrish is second on the team with 11 appearances and has a 1.29 ERA. Right-hander Shane Taylor is tied for third on the team in Appearances with 10 and has a victory to his credit. I don't know who the tallest Tarheel pitcher in history is but Redshirt Freshman Tim Brechbuehler at 6'8" has to be close. He has also appeared in 5 games but has 5 walks in 3 Innings Pitched. As with most tall Pitchers it seems that he has control issues but it all worked out pretty well for Bob Gibson and Randy Johnson.

The heart of the ACC season is on the way against some top flight competition and the 'Heels look primed for another run at the College World Series.

On To The Sweet Sixteen

First of all, allow me to say that I just thought Dan Bonner and Billy Packer were biased against the North Carolina Tarheels. There is a new biased announcer in town. His name is Clark Kellog. He did a fine job of being biased especially with that non-goaltending call against Washington in the first half. I would love for him to explain to me on what gravitationally challenged planet that ball would still be going up when it was blocked. Enough about that.

North Carolina beat Washington 86-83 to make it to the Sweet Sixteen. Statistically speaking that may be one of the best games North Carolina played all year. They almost shot 50 percent, they only had 9 turnovers, 6 of 12 from the three-point line, 18 of 23 from the free throw line, but there still seemed to be something missing.

The 'Heels do not play aggressive on the ball defense. If it wasn't for John Henson's shot blocking ability, you would never know they played defense. Other teams players seem to drive to the basket at will against the 'Heels, they cannot seem to guard the three point line to save their ass (Isiah Thomas got a really good look at the basket for the last shot of the game), and if UNC bothers running any kind of a press, they get blistered two or three times before they give it up. They have a tendency to play classic "help" defense and I hate it. All they seem to do when they do that is give up wide open three-pointers.

John Henson has had a great tournament. I do not know what he was thinking at the end of the game. he had a mental lapse of some kind and gave Washington a second chance by knocking the ball out of bounds and then almost goaltending on the final shot. I always tried to get my players to think situationally. Be aware of what is going on and think about the situation in front of you.

Kendall Marshall had another great game. 13 points, 14 assists, and only 4 turnovers. Tyler Zeller had another solid game with 23 points and Harrison Barnes had 22. Dexter Strickland finally came out of his scoring shell with 13 points. They played a solid game as a team but there was still that one thing missing.

Henson, Zeller, and Barnes

That was quite a performance by the Tarheels big three scorers in their opening round game against Long Island University. They scored 84 of the 'Heels 102 points in the 102-87 win.

Tyler Zeller had a career high of 32 points, Harrison Barnes had 24 points and a career high 16 rebounds, and John Henson had a career high of 28 points.

They won the game but the negatives almost outweigh the positives. The played horrendous defense (they gave up 85 shots), they still can't hit an outside shot (3 of 17 from the three-point line), and they were careless with the ball (18 turnovers). A repeat performance like this and Sunday will be their final game of the year.

From the fan's perspective, it was an exciting game to watch. Alot of up-and-down, alot of points, a few dunks, blocked shots and some great plays by both teams. You really couldn't ask for anything more from a #15-#2 game. Washington or Georgia?

A Great Time to be a Tarheel Sports Fan

This is a great time of year to be a Tarheel sports fan. The NCAA tournament starts tonight, spring football practice started a couple of days ago, and the Diamond 'Heels are getting into the heart of their ACC baseball schedule.

I read the other day where defensive lineman Brandon Willis has made his way back onto the Tarheel football team but they released 5-Star Recruit, also a defensive lineman, Delvon Simmons from his letter of intent, signed about six weeks ago. As soon as I saw the spring rosters and the spring depth chart on tarheelblue.com, I quickly printed me off a copy so I could see if anything or anyone really stood out. The thing that stood out to me was the relative youth of the Tarheels for next season. They are still going to be a young team with some key positions to fill.

The Tarheel basketball team opens NCAA tournament play tonight against Long Island University. Losing the ACC tournament to Duke stung quite a bit, but the 'Heels did not play well all tournament. They were really kind of lucky against Miami and Clemson and they tried using the same formula to fall behind by double digits against Duke but they are too good a team to allow UNC back into the game. Lets hope they learned a few lessons and will play better in the tournament.

The Diamond 'Heels lost two of three to a struggling Wake Forest team and it wasn't exactly a great way to open ACC play. They came back and took out Princeton mid-week to put them at 15-3 going into a weekend series with Virginia Tech.

The Diamond 'Heels Open Up ACC Play

The Diamond 'Heels opened ACC play with a 7-1 win over Wake Forest, their 8th win in a row and puts them at 14-1 on the season and they are shooting up the rankings with a bullet.

Patrick Johnson is on a roll with a 3-0 record and a 1.07 ERA and the relief pitching they are getting is off the charts. Levi Michael cooled down a little bit, being mired in a mini-slump, that has brought his batting average back down to the Ty Cobb range.

The 'Heels don't seem to have the power they have had in years past and are having to play more situational baseball. I read on one of the Tarheel websites that they have had 16 innings this year where they have scored 4 or more runs including an inning against Wake Forest last night where they plated 6. Ben Bunting had the big hit in the inning with a bases clearing double.

Winning the Close Ones

The Tarheels have shown a knack for being able to win the close ones this year and Game One of the ACC Tournament against Miami was no exception. You also have to be able to win the games in which you do not play your best and, once again, this game was no exception.

This was the worst game the 'Heels had played in quite a while. They were so careless with the ball in the first half, Roy Williams put 5 walk-ons into the game only down 13-8 so he could reem out the 5 that were on the court. I don't know if it was because of a "Duke hangover" or what but that was a very bad stretch of basketball. As a consequence they were down 31-22 at the half after allowing Miami to outscore them 11-2 down the stretch in the first half.

The second half didn't start out much better as Miami built up a 53-34 lead with a little under 8 minutes to play. Its no secret that Roy Willaims is not a big fan of the ACC Tournament and it looked like his team was going to get plenty of rest going into the NCAA's. Leslie McDonald provided a huge spark off the bench, hitting three 3's down the stretch and Kendall Marshall hit a couple of 3's as well and Miami turned ice cold from the field.

UNC got the ball back with 18.6 seconds left, Kendall marshall drove the lane and dished it to Tyler Zeller under the basket and he banged a left-handed layup off the glass right as time expired to win it 61-59. The ball left his hand with 0.2 seconds to go. Game Over.

It was not a pretty win and a game they probably did not deserve to win, but it still counts and Clemson is up next. The 'Heels had 20 turnovers in that game and they had better not have a repeat performance tomorrow or they probably will not win.

The ACC Tournament

The ACC tournament will always hold a special place for me because it brings back great memories from my childhood and my teenage years. The first day of the tournament (back then the first day was always on Friday) was the only day of the year that my mother would allow me to skip school. That was a huge deal for me because I could be throwing up all night and my Mom would send my ass to school the next day. That's how fanatical she was about my school attendance.

The Tarheels were usually the #1 seed back then and at the worst, they were a #2, so they always played at Noon. The first game was usually a butt kicking against the lowest seeded team in the ACC but I was always right there glued to my TV set. I had the house to myself and it was my little piece of heaven. During halftime, I would go outside and shoot baskets to really get into the spirit of things.

My father and I were completely different people but the love of Tarheel basketball was always one connection that we had. I must admit that I lost alot of passion for Tarheel basketball when he passed away in January 2007 because it just doesn't seem as important now as it used to. I am hoping that watching the ACC Tournament today and posting these memories of my father will rekindle some of that lost passion for Tarheel basketball. I may even go outside and shoot a few baskets at halftime.

The NCAA needs to go Part I

The NCAA needs to cease to exist as an organization and as a governing body. They shouldn't even be allowed to oversee intramural teams on college campuses. After dropping the ball on the Cam Newton situation they decided to go all the way with the Ohio State situation which is still continuing to produce allegations, confessions, and "self imposed" sanctions.

Ohio State players were caught selling memorabilia to a Columbus, OH tattoo parlor. They were disciplined with multi-game suspensions for the 2011 season but were allowed to play in the bowl game vs. Arkansas. This included star QB Terrelle Pryor. There was a chance he may have turned pro and not be punished at all. I thought a bowl game was a reward for a good season and yet these players were rewarded for displaying bad judgement and violating NCAA rules.

The head coach Jim Tressel, knew about it well in advance of the allegations against the players coming out in the media and yet didn't say a word to anyone about it for "confidentiality" reasons. He was confident he wouldn't be caught. He talked all of his players into coming back for another season so they could "face the music." What a hippocrite. He didn't say anything about it when he first learned of it well before the season started for fear it may sabotage a potential National Championship season.

Ohio State, in their zest to prove to the NCAA that they can punish their own, suspended him for two games and fined him $250,000. He will miss two chump games that they were going to win anyway and the money is pocket change. He will make that up by doing a few more ads for car dealerships in Columbus.

This is the NCAA's opportunity to prove themselves a strong governing body by at least suspending him as long as they do the players if not for the whole season. Tressel should have immediately reported the situation to the NCAA and took his lumps. He was aware of what was going on and chose to do or say nothing. Now it is time for him to "face the music."

Home Opening Series

The UNC baseball team opened up the home portion of their schedule against Seton Hall this weekend with two straight wins, 10-5 and 7-1. This is the first time the Tarheels have opened up their season 6-0 since 2007 I read off of tarheelblue.com. I don't know how good Seton Hall is but two wins is two wins.

Levi Michael is still tearing it up, batting over .500 in the first six games and leading the team with 8 RBI's and 4 stolen bases. Freshman 3B Colin Moran is right behind him batting over .400 with 7 RBI's and he hit his first collegiate homerun in the home opener against Seton Hall. Senior Outfielder Ben Bunting is in a little bit of a slump, batting below .200 but has been figuring out a way to get on base as he leads the team with 10 runs scored.

The starting pitching has been solid as both Patrick Johnson and Chris Munnelly picked up their first wins of the season against Seton Hall and the relief pitching has been lights out all season. They didn't give up any runs against Seton Hall in 5 1/3 innings pitched.

I hope to be able to make it down for a game or two this season and see the new Boshamer Stadium and take in the green grass and feel the warmth of the sun from the bleachers. I love baseball!

The Diamond Tarheels

The college baseball season has started and I don't believe coach Mike Fox and the North Carolina Tarheels baseball team receive enough credit for bringing attention to the University of North Carolina. They have made several College World Series appearances and came within a game of winning the title a few years ago.

Coach Fox recruits very well nationally and very often this works against him. Many of his recruits are top draft picks in the Major League draft every year and sign professional contracts rather than spend a minimum of three years in college. Many recent players such as Andrew Miller, Alex White, Matt Harvey, and Dustin Ackley have played their college careers out and have been very high draft picks in the Major League draft and the latter three are on the verge of making their major league debuts.

The 'Heels had their opening series last weekend in a tournament in southern California against some solid competition and came away with a 4-0 sweep, including a 4-3 victory against #8 Cal State-Fullerton. Right now, pitching seems to be the 'Heels strong suit this early in the season. They don't seem to have the big bats they have had in years past and they may have to play more situational baseball, some hit-and-run, take more cances on the basepaths. A little bit of old school baseball.

Junior Levi Michael had a great first series leading the team with a .500 batting average and 4 stolen bases. Junior Jacob Stallings led the team with a homer and 5 RBI's and chipped in with a .412 average. Senior Greg Holt got 2 of the 4 wins in relief as he didn't give up a run in 4 2/3 innings and starting pitchers Chirs Munnelly, Patrick Johnson, and Kent Emanuel were equally impressive only giving up a combined total of 4 runs in 17 innings.

4-0 is not a bad way to start for a team that was only picked to be in the middle of the pack in a very strong ACC.

Tarheels on a Roll

The Tarheels vanquished rival NC State last night for the tenth straight time. I would love to say it was easy but nothing is easy this season for the Tarheels. This is easily the worst shooting team in Tarheels basketball history at least since I have been an ardent fan since the Phil Ford years of the mid-1970's. It used to be news if the 'Heels shot under 50 percent for a game, now it is a major part of the story if they shoot over 50 percent. One reason for this is they are not getting as many fast break points as they have in past seasons and and are not pushing the ball up the court as hard.

They are 21-6 on the season and should be a lock for the NCAA's this season and are slowly working their way back up the polls. The last I checked they were #19 in one poll with a game against Duke on the horizon. I really can't explain how the 'Heels have been winning but they just have is the bottom line. Some credit their defense, others point out the weak ACC this season, and I am beginning to believe smoke and mirrors.

They still have a few weaknesses and the two most obvious are three point shooting and inside depth. The Tarheels bench has all but disappeared over the course of the past 5 or 6 games, Justin Knox is the only big man coming off the bench and no one is providing any points. Other ACC teams are finally figuring out to beat the 'Heels or at least to stay with them, you have to play zone and the 'Heels are incapable of shooting them out of it. The ACC tournament should be very interesting this year and I am hoping the 'Heels will snap out of their team wide shooting slump and get really hot for the tournament.

On a very positive note, center Tyler Zeller was named Academic All-American just a few days ago. That is the first Academic All-American the Tarheels have had since Eric Montross in 1994. Most fans forget that the players are student athletes and that the student part is more important than the basketball or football part.
